Some New Jersey residents who receive Medicaid through NJ FamilyCare will have to complete 80 hours per month of work, study, training, or volunteering to stay covered.
You can complete any combination of the following activities (also called “Community Engagement” or “CE” activities) to keep receiving your health care coverage.
Community Engagement
Any combination of activities = 80 hours per month
- Employment Working a paid job or being self-employed
- Education Being enrolled as a student in a college or vocational program
- Job Training Participating in a work training program
- Volunteering Unpaid work for an agency or nonprofit organization
Do these rules apply to me?
New rules generally apply to people who meet all of these categories:
- Adults 19–64
- On Medicaid expansion
- Without exemptions
Many people will not be affected by these rules. This includes:
- Adults 65 and over
- Parents and primary caregivers of a young child
- People with certain health, family, or life conditions that are considered "exemptions"

If the new rules apply to you, you can plan now to complete 80 hours of approved activities each month.

New requirements begin
- Be aware of new activities requirements for Medicaid coverage, and maintain or increase hours to stay covered
- Keep records of approved activities, such as pay stubs or school enrollment forms
